SSR celebrates Christmas with Humble & Fred

In the true spirit of pirate radio, Humble & Fred have been producing their own podcast and promoting it to nearly 200,000 daily listeners!  It’s an amazing story so far, and it got more interesting a few weeks ago.

Humble & Fred Global Headquarters received an official letter from Corus Entertainment telling them to cease and desist the use of “Humble & Fred” because Corus owns the trademark.  The letter went on to offer the trademark in exchange for a sum of money which H&F do not have.  After a phone call, the Humble & Fred team agreed to raise money for a charity with Corus’ help and in exchange Corus would surrender ownership of the Humble & Fred trademark to the boys themselves!

This brings us to the Humble & Fred Gift of Podcast Xmas happening at Wayne Gretzky’s on December 21st, 2011.  See Spot Run will be playing at the event to help raise money for charity and help the rightful owners of Humble & Fred reacquire their trademark.

The party starts at 5:30pm and they’ll be streaming live as well as uploading their podcast on HumbleAndFredRadio.com afterwards.  If you can’t make it to the show but still want to donate, you can click the “donate” link on the right side of the page at HumbleAndFredRadio.com.

If we don’t see you, have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday!

SSR drops in on Humble & Fred!

That’s right, they’re back!  First they ruined radio, and now they’re going to wreck the Internet (they said, not me… I love H&F).

Humble & Fred have gone pirate!  They have left the radio business and are now in the podcast business.  Yep, Canadian radio’s tag-team champions have started their own podcast radio show.  You can download a new show every day and it’s done LIVE in studio broadcast from a top-secret location.

Humble and Chris started chatting on Facebook a while back about this new venture and when the Humble & Fred show asked us to come in a perform a couple of songs we responded “absolutely.”  Not only do we love to play, but Humble & Fred have been big supporters of SSR since Weightless and we wanted to share their excitement of the wild west of the world wide web experience they’re creating.

humbleandfredradio.com

Two songs, some chat, and lots of fun is what you’ll hear on the 11.11.11 version of the show.  You can download the podcast directly from Humble & Fred’s site, or better yet you can subscribe to their podcast on iTunes and never miss another show!

Share the love on Facebook and Twitter and even G+ if you’re one of those geeky types (like me) who is on top of all the new social media stuff. ;)

SSR Lands in Newfoundland!

That’s right folks, SSR has landed in Newfoundland.

Our last couple of days was FILLED with events that continue to write our rock n’ roll book for us.  We arrived in Sydney, NS on Wednesday night to the historic Royal Hotel.  The Royal is a true rock n’ roll hotel where all the bands in the 80′s used to stay including the famous Cutting Crew (wrote “(I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight”) and the owners Irene and Bert have all the posters to prove it!

It was a great stay at the Royal and Thursday morning we were off to the Newfoundland ferry for our journey to the Rock.  OOPS!  High winds canceled the ferry Thursday morning and we had to head back to the Royal for the day.  We all got to nap a bit after having only 3 hours’ sleep the night before, so it wasn’t all bad.  We had planned for this possibility, so there was no problem in taking the evening ferry on Thursday night.

We arrived at the ferry around 830pm for the 11pm ferry and…. OH NO!  The inbound ferry had gotten tangled in a buoy on its way in!  No ships were leaving tonight… now we have a problem.  The next ferry was not scheduled to leave until 11am Friday which, after a 7 hour ferry ride) would put us in Port aux Basques around 630pm local time with a 2.5 hour drive ahead of us to Corner Brook!  Yikes… talk about stress.

Randy called Irene and we were back to the Royal for a third time. :)   We watched game 6 of the World Series at the local pub and then turned in for the second long day in a row.

The van docked the ferry around 9am Friday morning and they set off around 10am, an hour earlier than scheduled!  This was good news.  We arrived in Port aux Basques around 330pm local time which means the driver had the throttle wide open across the channel… also good news!  We roared out of the gate and hurried up the coast and arrived in Corner Brook around 630pm which meant we had just enough time to get everything done that we needed to in order to get the stage set up and get ourselves showered after the ferry ride… wonderful!

The show at The Bar Room last night was awesome.  The people were great to us, they were dancing and hollering all night long and our sound guy Max even lost his voice he was having such a great time. ;)   We are very thankful to The Bar Room, the radio support, and the fan support we’ve had throughout this tour and especially here in Newfoundland over the last while.

Tonight we’re headed back to The Bar Room for their Halloween party!  We can’t wait, it is going to be AWESOME.

See you there!

Nova Scotia and beyond!

What a week it has been.  The SSR bus left Toronto on Tuesday morning and arrived in Greenwood, NS on Thursday after a brief stopover in Rivière-du-Loop, QC on Wednesday.  We stayed in a couple of classic road motels and it was a fun trip!  We have all been taking turns tweeting our adventures so please be sure to check out our Twitter feed and follow us!

Our night in Greenwood was fantastic with the exception of the All-You-Can-Eat spaghetti at the Pizza Delight.  We should know by now that AYCE is never what you should get.  You always end up eating too much because you need to “get your money’s worth” and “stick it to the man”. :)   What ends up happening EVERY TIME is that you eat too much and feel like crap after; or in our case, you end up burping up spaghetti all night while you’re trying to sing.

The opening band at the Top Hat Beverage Room, Speed of Dark, was great, the people were fantastic and when we were cheered for an encore we decided to ask a question:

SSR: “What do you want to hear?  We can play Weightless again….”
Crowd: “WEIGHTLESS!!”
SSR: “… or we can play AC/DC.”
Crowd: “WEIGHTLESS!!!”

It was pretty amazing that everyone in the place wanted to hear us play Weightless a second time instead of playing a song by one of the greatest bands of all time.

Night and show #2 was in Westville, NS.  We arrived at the White Tail Pub & Grill in the afternoon to a warm reception by the locals which was great.  We set up the stage and hurried back to the hotel to get ready for the show.  Until you’ve actually ridden along in the van, no one can really appreciate how hectic and compressed our schedule is.  That said, there is also the entertainers’ cliché of “hurry up and wait” that happens a lot too. ;)

It was a smaller crowd at the White Tail but they were pumped to have us there.  The night picked up later on in the evening and we ended off with a full dance floor and another encore.

Last night’s exploits were in Dartmouth, NS!  It was a homecoming of sorts for the boys as Dartmouth/Halifax is some of their old stomping grounds.  The bar was rocking with the opener, Human, as we entered the club.  Chris from Live 105 FM was on hand to introduce the band and the whole Live 105 crew hung out for the entire show!  It was great to see the radio support not only in playing the song, but also coming to the gig; thank you guys.

Another amazing audience, another fantastic experience for us with amazing sound on stage and guitars cranked to 11.  We talk all the time about how there is nothing like be able to crank it up and play loud and last night was one of those shows.  We played two sets of original tunes that everyone was into, and people were singing every word, and there an atmosphere that I would defy anyone to ignore, and I realize that this is a run-on sentence, but I don’t even care, because it was awesome.

We have a couple of days off before we head to Newfoundland so we’re going to be around town in Halifax.  If you see one of us, come over and say hello!  We love meeting people in the towns we go to and I’m sure we’ll be hanging out somewhere having a coffee.

Look out Corner Brook, here comes SSR.

The Tour Has Begun!

That’s right, we hit the road this morning and even missed most of the rush hour traffic leaving Toronto!  Our quest to tour the Canadian East while simultaneously boycotting Tim Hortons is a success to this point!  We have stopped for coffee twice and no TH products were purchased.

I’ll be tweeting throughout our campaign, so make sure you follow us @seespotrun to get the latest on our adventures on the road!

PS – this is my first ever blog post FROM THE VAN.  Gotta love tethering.

SSR tour brought to you by McCafé!

We have decided that due to the consistently poor service and quality of product at Tim Hortons we will be avoiding their establishments at all costs.  Instead, SSR has chosen McCafé as our new coffee provider.  The product far exceeds the quality of Tim Hortons and the service is at least one step above theirs as well.

Last night’s foray at the Historic Red Dog in Peterborough was fun (as usual).  We played a few new/old originals that we have not unleashed upon our fans there and we played an encore of “Bust A Move” by request for the loudest encore-shouter!  It was pretty cool, we don’t usually play encores that I sing. :)

Tuesday we head out for the Maritimes to appear on CTV Morning Live on Thursday October 20, and then 3 shows in Nova Scotia.  A short ferry ride awaits with the promise of a rockin’ good time in Newfoundland’s Corner Brook.  We are stoked to head back to the East Coast for the next couple of weeks.

Follow us on Twitter, follow our Facebook page, or hell… get in your car and follow us!  We’ll be riding down the highways in our big blue bus.
